MAY 12, 2009 – UA College of Medicine to accept applications from non-resident students beginning in fall 2009
The University of Arizona College of Medicine has amended its admissions policy to consider applications from qualified non-resident students, beginning in fall 2009 for the class of 2014.
Since its first class was admitted in 1967, the UA College of Medicine has considered only applicants who are Arizona residents; highly qualified WICHE (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education) applicants from Montana or Wyoming; and Native Americans who reside on reservations contiguous with the state of Arizona. Since 1967, class size at the campus in Tucson has grown from 32 students to 115 students per year.
In 2006, a second full, four-year program, the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix in partnership with Arizona State University, was established in downtown Phoenix to help allay the severe physician shortage in Arizona. The College of Medicine – Phoenix, as it is called, enrolled 24 first-year students in the class of 2011, entering in 2007, and 48 students in each of the classes of 2012 and 2013. Within the next several years, incoming class size at the Phoenix Campus is projected to expand to 120 students.
In response to the increasing demand for highly qualified applicants to study medicine and ultimately serve the medical needs of Arizona’s burgeoning population, the UA College of Medicine Admissions Committee will consider highly qualified non-resident applicants for as much as 25 percent of the incoming first-year class for each campus.
In evaluating applicants, the admissions committee considers applicants’ entire academic record, performance on the MCAT, personal statement, interviews and letters of recommendation. More information on the selection process is available on this Web site. Please visit the home page at www.admissions.medicine.arizona.edu.
